Can You Split Payment at Best Buy? (Yes, Here is How)

Sometimes when you cannot cover your purchase with just one gift card, one credit card, or one checking account, you may want to split your payment among several payment methods.

Can You Split Payment at Best Buy?

You can split payments when you make a purchase at Best Buy stores. Just let the cashier know that you want to split payments. Other than their Geek Squad services, subscriptions or protection plans, you can split your payment among any payment method.

When you purchase on BestBuy.com, you can only split your payment between a Best Buy gift card and a debit or credit card.

You can even use multiple gift cards and then put the remaining amount of your order on a credit or debit card. But no other payment combinations are allowed.

Best Buy also offers a no-interest 12 months payment plan if you make your purchase using My Best Buy Credit Card.

How to Split Payment at Best Buy Store

You can split payment in a Best Buy store for almost all types of purchases except protection plans, subscriptions, and most Geek Squad services.

All you need to do is to let your cashier know about your wish to split payment before they start to ring up your purchases.

You can even specify the order in which you wish to apply your payment methods to make sure each method has enough balance to cover its portion of the payment.

For example, you can tell your cashier to first use up the balance on your Best Buy gift card, then use up the balance on your prepaid Visa debit card, and then finally put the rest of the purchase amount on your checking account debit card.

This way, you can make sure you have enough balance on your checking account to cover its portion of the purchase and you would not be charged by your bank with any overdraft fee, which typically can cost $35 or $39 per overdraft.

Is There Any Other Way to Split Payments at Best Buy?

You can use Best Buy’s store credit card called “My Best Buy” to make payment monthly. My Best Buy Credit Card is not a general credit card and can only be used for purchases in Best Buy stores or on the Best Buy website.

There is a different version of Best Buy credit card, called My Best Buy Visa, that is a general credit card. You can use My Best Buy Visa anywhere Visa is accepted. However, My Best Buy Visa does not offer any no-interest monthly payment plan.

Back to the My Best Buy Credit Card, if you use it to pay for a Best Buy purchase that is $299 or more, you can in effect get a no-interest monthly payment plan. You will not need to pay any interest at all as long as you:

  • Make a payment every month before you pay off your purchase in full
  • Pay off your purchase in full within 12 months of your purchase

However, there is a big catch with this monthly payment plan – if you do not pay off your purchase in full within 12 months of your purchase, you will be charged interest retroactively

In other words, if the purchase is not completely paid off within 12 months, Best Buy will go back 12 months ago to the date of your purchase and start calculating interest from that date on.

So, if you ever use this no-interest monthly payment plan from Best Buy, make sure you pay it off by month 12. Otherwise, you will be hit with a big interest bill after that.

My Best Buy Credit Card also offers rewards, with the rewards level vary depending on your level in Best Buy’s loyalty shopper program – My Best Buy.
