Best Pregnancy Tests at CVS (Brand Comparison Chart)

If you need a pregnancy test, you often need more than one. You have to check at different times and double-check. But the price of pregnancy tests can add up.

Even though all pregnancy tests essentially do the same thing, they vary a lot in price. CVS has some of the cheapest pregnancy tests on the market with a single test for as low as $1.

However, the CVS pregnancy test packs of 2, 3, or more cost about the same at Walgreens, Walmart and Target. Walmart has some of the more expensive options while Target and Walgreens are averagely priced.

The cheapest pregnancy test at CVS is the 1 step Pregnancy Test for $1.00. The cheapest 2-pack is the CVS brand One Step pregnancy test for $12.99. The cheapest 3-pack is the CVS brand One Step as well, for $16.79, which is almost 20% cheaper per test than the 2-pack. CVS also has a new, 5-pack in the One Step brand for $19.99 which makes each test one-third cheaper than the two-pack.

The cost of pregnancy tests can add up over time, so we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about pricing pregnancy tests at CVS and other big box stores (hint: Walgreens has pregnancy test packs for cheap).

The cheapest option is the Personal Care $1 test at CVS or the dollar store, which can be just as accurate as the expensive ones.

However, if you want a pregnancy test that can give you results early, you’ll need to splurge a little more. But whichever test you choose, know when to take it for the best results, and remember that pregnancy tests are HSA/FSA eligible expenses.

For a full breakdown of the costs of pregnancy tests at CVS, check out the table below which lists pregnancy tests from cheapest to most expensive.

First Response Digital 2 pack $                      12.74 $                      25.49

The cheapest option is simply the $1 pregnancy test. You can’t beat $1! However, many people worry that a cheaper pregnancy test will not be as accurate as the more expensive ones.

The difference between cheap and expensive pregnancy tests; however, is not how accurate they are but generally how easy they are to use, how long you have to wait for your results, and for some of the pricier options, you can take the test a few days sooner in your cycle and still get results.

CVS Health Early Result vs One Step Price

Under the CVS Health brand, the two main pregnancy test options are Early Result and One Step.

CVS Early Result

The CVS Early Result pregnancy test has a 99% accuracy rate, but the advantage of this product is that it can detect pregnancy up to five days sooner than other tests.

The test includes a digital pregnancy test and an early results test. It can detect the pregnancy hormone in your urine up to five days before your period should start.

However, note that the 99% accuracy is only when you take the test on the day you expect your period to start. Overall, it has 4.2/5 stars based on almost 400 reviews.

PackPrice Each testTotal
Early Result 1 pack $                      10.79 $                      10.79
Early Result 2 pack $                        7.00 $                      13.99
Early Result 3 pack $                        5.83 $                      17.49

CVS One Step

On the other hand, the CVS Health One Step pregnancy test is just a little bit cheaper. For the few cents, you save it still offers 99% accurate results that can appear as quickly as one minute after taking the test.

However, this option does not give you the advantage of checking up to five days before your expected period.

You will need to test on the first day your period should start. Both tests require you to hold the tip under your urine stream for a few seconds.

The One Step product is also rated 4.2/5 stars but only has about 100 ratings.

PackPrice Each testTotal
One Step 1 Pack $                      10.79 $                      10.79
One Step 2 Pack $                        6.50 $                      12.99
One Step 3 Pack $                        5.60 $                      16.79

ClearBlue vs First Response Price

CVS sells three big brands on pregnancy tests: their own CVS Health options, ClearBlue, and First Response. We’ve already compared the CVS Health options above, but let’s compare them to the other brands.

ClearBlue Pregnancy Test

ClearBlue pregnancy tests at CVS either come in a 2 pack or a 4 pack. ClearBlue is the only pregnancy test that offers a countdown to when your result will be digitally displayed.

Users report that this is reassuring to know that the test is working and calculating results. It also displays your test in words, so you don’t have to interpret lines.

And like other tests, it boasts a 99% accuracy rate when used on the day of your expected period.

This test is also like the CVS Health Early Result test and can be used up to five days before your missed period, so you can find out sooner. ClearBlue also has 4.6/5 stars out of 72 reviews on the CVS website.

First Response Pregnancy Test

First Response is another popular brand that makes pregnancy tests. It’s the #1 selling brand of pregnancy tests.

They also guarantee 99% accuracy and can get you results up to four days before the first day of your expected period. They offer both a traditional line test and a digital test.

However, the brand only has 3/5 stars out of more than 400 reviews on the CVS website. Some reviewers have reported false positives using this test, causing a low rating.

How to Save Money on Pregnancy Tests

Take it at the right time

The top tip for saving money on pregnancy tests is to take them at the right time. If you take a test too early, it could give you a false negative and lead to you needing to purchase more and more tests.

It can take up to two weeks after you conceive for the pregnancy hormone to be at high enough levels to show on a pregnancy test. So, it’s recommended that you wait until at least one week after a missed period to take a pregnancy test.

The best time of day to take a pregnancy test is early in the morning when your CG hormone levels are typically highest. Try to take it at the right time in your cycle, especially in the morning for the best results.

Pregnancy tests are FSA/HSA Eligible

FSA eligible means that they can be covered by a flexible spending account (FSA). Pregnancy tests are considered a qualified medical expense, or necessary medical expenses, that you can use an FSA or HSA (health savings account) to pay for.

FSA and HSA accounts are money set aside for medical expenses. Generally, if your employer offers an FSA or HSA option, you are eligible for an FSA.
